In a World That Rejects the Truth, We Must Stand Firm

4 Min Read

You and I long for the church to grow in the fullness of the knowledge of God and His holiness.

This month we have a special new resource to help you grow in this knowledge: Dr. R.C. Sproul’s expositional commentary on Galatians. We’ll send you a copy for your donation of any amount to Ligonier Ministries. More on that below.

God’s people are struggling right now. Christian maturity is lacking, and biblical illiteracy is rampant. Ligonier’s 2022 State of Theology survey reveals the depth of the problem. You can read a full report of our findings from the survey at TheStateOfTheology.com.

The church is supposed to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. But the saltiness has become diluted, and the witness of God’s people has grown dim in too many places.

To restore savor and brightness to the church, there must be a renewed commitment to divinely revealed truth.

Ligonier Ministries labors around the world to help the church fulfill its mission and make disciples who are salt and light on the earth, proclaiming the freedom of forgiveness in Christ alone, through faith alone, by grace alone, for God’s glory alone.

Our Savior is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), so the only path of faithfulness is an embrace of His truth and a commitment to live by it. No one comes to the Father except through Him. Only the gospel as it is powerfully declared can strengthen the church and embolden its witness. R.C. explained why, telling us:

“The truth redeems. The truth preserves. The truth makes us free. The truth makes us holy.”

This theme animated Dr. Sproul’s ministry, and it is one that Ligonier seeks to continually embody by proclaiming the holiness and grace of God to the world. This theme is taught throughout Scripture, but the book of Galatians presents it in an especially clear way. I sat under R.C.’s preaching of Galatians during the final years of his ministry, and I can still remember his concern to get this vital message to the church today. In Galatians we learn:

The truth of the gospel redeems because it declares that in the fullness of time, God sent forth His Son to redeem us from the curse of the law and enslavement to the world (Gal. 4:1–7).

The truth of the gospel preserves because it was revealed by God as the measure for what teaching is to be kept and what is to be discarded. Whatever is not faithful to the Apostolic gospel must be rejected, and whatever is faithful to it must be preserved (Gal. 1:8–9).

The truth of the gospel makes us free because it liberates us from the bondage of sin so that we enjoy the freedom of the children of Abraham: justification by faith alone and union with Christ according to God’s free promise (Gal. 3:15–29).

The truth of the gospel makes us holy because through faith alone in this gospel we receive the Holy Spirit, and we are enabled to walk by faith so that we live less for ourselves and live increasingly for God and neighbor, no longer fulfilling the sinful desires of the flesh (Gal. 3:1–9; 5:1–26).

Knowing and believing the truth brings life to us and to others. This is the passion that drove R.C., and it is the same passion that drives all that Ligonier strives to teach today.

Your financial support is the means for Ligonier to expand its teaching of the life-changing truth of the gospel to millions of people every month. From publishing, to podcasting, to online learning, to conferences, to translation work now in more than forty languages, Ligonier has been faithfully serving the church for five decades. By God’s grace and with your prayerful generosity, we want to serve millions—even billions—more, and for decades to come. Will you help?

Your support makes a difference, helping men and women, boys and girls to know the freedom they have in Christ and how they can live as faithful disciples in a world that is increasingly hostile to the historic Christian faith. Your support helps believers to know what they believe, why they believe it, how to defend it, and how to share it.

Recently Vineet from India told us,

“When I was twenty years old, God convicted me of my sin. I often think of how I nearly ended my life in despair because I lacked the clear, liberating truth of the gospel. But God used R.C. Sproul’s teaching to bless my life. Now decades later, our small church plant is regularly using resources from Ligonier. I have many responsibilities to handle as a church planter, but Ligonier is helping to serve and mature the saints.”

That is so encouraging. We receive numerous testimonials like this every week. And it’s all made possible through the prayers and gifts, both large and small, of ministry friends like you.

This month we have a special gift to thank you for your support of Ligonier, Galatians: An Expositional Commentary by Dr. R.C. Sproul. This work is fresh off the press and is the fruit of R.C.’s preaching through the book of Galatians at Saint Andrew’s Chapel in Central Florida. We are eager for you to receive this Christ-exalting work, full of sound exposition of the gospel and insightful practical application. It will be a great addition to any Bible study library, and we’ll send you a copy when you give a gift of any amount to Ligonier.

You can help equip churches and Christians with the sound truth of the gospel. We thank God for you.
