What do people in the United Kingdom really believe about God, the Bible, and salvation?
For the second time since 2018, Ligonier Ministries UK has sought to find out through The State of Theology survey. This nationwide survey takes the UK’s theological temperature, exposing what people actually believe—both outside and inside the church.
The results are in, and they reveal great opportunity and great need.
There is some reason for encouragement. Many churches appear to be welcoming newcomers, and 28% of UK evangelicals say they began attending Sunday church services for the first time as adults within the past two years.
Yet the findings also reveal significant theological confusion among professing evangelicals and widespread uncertainty among the wider public:
- 63% of UK evangelicals believe that most people are good by nature.
- 39% of adults in the UK are unsure about who God is.
- 57% of ‘new evangelicals’ think the Bible contains ancient myths but is not literally true.
An Opportunity for Discipleship
As new people enter churches, there is a significant opportunity to ground them in God’s Word through faithful teaching and discipleship. At the same time, widespread uncertainty about religious matters within Britain points to the need for faithful gospel witness throughout the country.
