How serious is our sin?
The State of Theology survey has returned to the United Kingdom, revealing what people really believe about God, the Bible, and salvation.
The results reveal significant confusion, even among professing Christians.
63% of evangelicals in the United Kingdom agree with the statement, “Everyone sins a little, but most people are good by nature.”
This response shows that the confusion has grown worse since Ligonier’s last UK survey in 2018, when 48% of UK evangelicals agreed with this false statement.
Now, nearly two-thirds of evangelicals seem to misunderstand the effects of the fall. Though God created humanity upright and in His image (Gen. 1:26–27), Adam’s sin corrupted the entire human race. We’re not good people who occasionally do wrong. By nature, we are fallen sinners in desperate need of God’s grace.
Scripture is clear about the seriousness of our sinful condition. We have all sinned and fallen short of God’s perfect standard of righteousness (Rom. 3:23). That is why we need Jesus Christ, the only One who has perfectly obeyed God’s law and whose righteousness alone can make sinners right with our holy Creator.
