Military Chaplain Outreach

Help bring the gospel to the front lines.

Ligonier exists to support the church of Jesus Christ in its task of discipleship in service to the Great Commission (Matt. 28:16–20). As God’s people go to the ends of the earth to make disciples, we strive to see them well equipped for ministry today that will leave an eternal impact.

Ligonier’s Military Chaplain Outreach is one way we pursue this goal. We desire to outfit chaplains and military personnel around the world with the trustworthy discipleship resources that Ligonier provides so that they may grow in their knowledge of God and of His holiness.

What Is the Need?

As members of the armed forces dedicate their lives to protecting freedoms and pursuing peace, military chaplains are there to minister to the troops. Too often, however, chaplains lack the resources they require to meet soldiers’ spiritual needs, while many chaplains serve without the support and encouragement of other mature Christians.

What Do We Offer?

Our strategy is simple: We seek to provide a spiritual supply line for servicemen and women by providing them with the trustworthy teaching resources that Ligonier has produced for decades.

To ensure that these custom resource packages suit the unique ministry needs of chaplains and their troops, we have worked closely with chaplains to develop this program. This is a far-reaching partnership, as chaplains use these resources to minister to thousands of soldiers stationed in the United States, Korea, Germany, and in other regions throughout the world.

Thanks to generous ministry supporters, this critical outreach delivers resource packages of books, study Bibles, and bulk subscriptions to Tabletalk magazine. This is done by supplying chaplains with credits to obtain the specific resources they believe will aid them best in their ministry efforts. Chaplain (MAJ) Eric Leetch comments: “These resources provide the unmatched combination of biblical faithfulness and intellectual stimulation that our soldiers both need and want.” In addition to these resource packages, Ligonier welcomes chaplains to receive free admission to our National Conference and regional events.

At this time, we partner with more than 600 military chaplains. Most chaplains who partner with Ligonier are ministering to more than 3,000 people at a time, faced with the constant challenge of outfitting military families with gospel resources. Because of the financial support of friends such as you, our partner chaplains currently serve more than 1,000,000 people, which includes men and women in uniform as well as their families. Still, the remaining need is vast.

How Do I Partner and Contribute?

First, Ligonier is always seeking new chaplain partners. If you serve as a military chaplain or are aware of a chaplain who might be interested in receiving discipleship materials, please encourage them to contact our team at chaplainoutreach@ligonier.org or fill out the following registration form. It is a privilege to arm chaplains with truth for the good fight of the faith (1 Tim. 6:12).

Second, this partnership would not be possible without the generous supporters who help fund this needed outreach. If you believe in this outreach and want it to expand to more men and women in uniform and military families, we ask you to consider a financial gift. By God’s grace, your gift of $25, $50, or $100 can help renew minds and transform lives through this partnership, equipping soldiers in the knowledge of the Lord.

Testimonies

Chaplain John Sackett told the story of one soldier leaving on a trip: “Hey Chaplain! Give me something to read during my two weeks at school,” he said. Chaplain Sackett gave him two booklets by Dr. R.C. Sproul: How Can I Develop a Christian Conscience? and What Is the Church? The soldier came back later and asked to meet regularly. He had never taken his Christian faith seriously, but these booklets had shown him his need for discipleship and further study in Reformed theology so that he might lead his family well.

“I begin my next assignment as the Staff Chaplain of the Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss soon. I will serve approximately 2,500 future Sergeants Major per year and approximately seventy-five staff personnel. Please know that any materials I receive from this ministry will not only help shape the souls of the senior enlisted leaders of the Army, but also the quality of their leadership with thousands of warfighters.” —CH (MAJ) Joe Salem

“Ligonier has been a terrific support for me as a Navy chaplain. I am confident these materials are helping sailors grow in their faith and being used by our glorious God to fulfill His amazing purposes. Thank you, Ligonier, for being there for me and my sailors!” —CH Buster Williams

Our policy is to apply gifts given toward a specific program. If we receive more contributions than can be wisely used for a given project, we apply these funds to meet other pressing needs in our outreach efforts. We are committed to stewarding all gifts wisely toward the goal of proclaiming the holiness of God to as many people as possible. Ligonier Ministries is a charter member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability.
