Hausa Outreach
Help provide trusted teaching to Hausa-speaking Christians.
What Is the Opportunity?
The language of Hausa is spoken by 94 million people, primarily in West Africa. Due to rapid population growth in Africa, it has risen to become the world’s nineteenth most-spoken language.
Most Hausa-speaking people live in the northern region of Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, and in neighboring Niger. Hausa is also spoken by a significant number of people in Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Ghana, Chad in Central Africa, and Sudan in East Africa.
The Hausa-speaking regions of northern Nigeria and Niger are historically Muslim, with some adherents of traditional religions. As British-led missionary efforts developed in Nigeria during the nineteenth century, they increasingly turned to converted local Africans—including freed slaves—to establish mission outposts and share the gospel in Hausa-speaking areas. Churches were gradually established. The first portions of Scripture were translated into Hausa in the mid-nineteenth century, and the first full Hausa Bible was completed in 1932.
Today, about half the population of Nigeria identifies as Christian and half as Muslim. The north remains predominantly Muslim and enforces Sharia law. In recent years, widespread attacks on local Christian communities by armed Islamic groups have killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.
There is an urgent need to support Hausa-speaking believers with faithful discipleship resources so they can stand firm in Christ. Trusted biblical teaching is essential to strengthen the church and help God’s people persevere amid ongoing hardship.
How Is Ligonier Meeting These Needs?
We strive to reach Hausa-speaking pastors, laypeople, and unbelievers from all walks of life through the following outreach efforts.
Web and Social Media
By God’s grace, the truth of the gospel is reaching Hausa-speaking people online. Ligonier’s dedicated Hausa website, together with our Facebook and Instagram pages, is providing ready access to trustworthy Bible teaching. Our website contains historic Christian creeds and confessions, with additional materials underway.
The Ligonier Statement on Christology
Confusion abounds regarding Christology—the doctrine of Christ. As the church continues to grow, it is imperative that believers learn the truths of Scripture as summarized in the great confessions of faith. We produced The Word Made Flesh: The Ligonier Statement on Christology to help Christians know what the church has historically taught and to provide clarity on the person and work of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to distribute this statement worldwide, and it has already been translated into numerous languages, including Hausa.
Books
Growing interest in Reformed theology has sparked requests for more discipleship resources from Dr. Sproul and Ligonier Ministries. Our plans include translating and distributing the following titles from the Crucial Questions series:
- Can I Be Sure I'm Saved? by R.C. Sproul
- Who Is the Holy Spirit? by R.C. Sproul
- What Is Faith? by R.C. Sproul
- What Is the Gospel? by R.C. Sproul
- Who Is Jesus? by R.C. Sproul
The Reformation Study Bible is also being distributed across Nigeria to pastors, missionaries, and seminary students as part of Ligonier’s Study Bibles for the World initiative.
What Is Needed?
- Digital outreach — $24,297 USD (annually)
- Printing 1,000 copies of five Crucial Questions titles — $14,300 USD
Funding needs reflect quoted estimates based on December 2025 foreign exchange rates and current translation fees. Give today to contribute to these outreach goals.
How Do Your Gifts Help?
These are only a few of our many international projects underway. We ask you to prayerfully consider supporting these efforts through your financial gifts and prayers for the Hausa-speaking and global church. By God’s grace, your generosity enables the translation, printing, and distribution of trusted discipleship resources, providing countless opportunities to reach people with the truth of God’s Word. You can donate here.
Our policy is to apply gifts given toward a specific program. If we receive more contributions than can be wisely used for a given project, we apply these funds to meet other pressing needs in our outreach efforts. We are committed to stewarding all gifts wisely toward the goal of proclaiming the holiness of God to as many people as possible. Ligonier Ministries is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability.
