The July issue of Tabletalk considers the importance of our faithfulness to God in the little things. Most of us tend to place our focus on what seems most consequential, on what appears to be the most important tasks before us. We believe that faithfulness in the big things is of utmost importance, that the true measure of our character is seen in how well we steward the main responsibilities of our vocations and those areas in which we seem to make the greatest public impact. Of course, faithfulness in the big things of life—public service, vocational ministry, leadership at home and on the job—is vital, and Scripture exhorts us to pay careful attention in all these areas. However, Scripture also tells us that faithfulness in the big things is not enough. God also cares about the little things, those areas of life that are often unseen and wherein faithfulness and success do not often attract much outward attention. Indeed, “one who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in very little is also dishonest in much” (Luke 16:10). This issue reminds readers that God cares about the little things, calling us to see that faithfulness in the big things is impossible if we are not faithful in the little things.
