Jesus, in the midst of the tempest, is sound asleep in the back of the boat. But they are fearful. And they rush to the back of the boat and they grab him, and say, “Jesus, wake up. Do something.” And He says, “What’s the matter? What’s the matter?” He sees this storm coming, so He walks over and says, “Alright, peace. Be still.” And the sea stops it raging and winds become calm. What’s the response of the disciples when Jesus removes the clear and present threat of nature? Does it say they throw their sou’westers in the air and rejoice and say, “Oh, we knew you would do it.” No. The text tells us that at that moment, they became very much afraid. The power that is unleashed when God speaks brings things out of nothing and life out of death.

If there is one maverick molecule in the universe—one molecule running loose outside the scope of God’s sovereign ordination—then ladies and gentlemen, there is not the slightest confidence that you can have that any promise that God has ever made about the future will come to pass. The Bible uses words like “we’re dead in sin,” “we’re in bondage to sin,” “we’re by nature the children of wrath.” We do not want God in our thinking, because He’s holy and we’re not. And here, the king of the universe places His indelible mark on the soul of every one of His people. In every generation the gospel must be published anew with the same boldness, and the same clarity, and the same urgency that came forth in the 16th-century Reformation. If God is not sovereign, God is not God.
