Help our Military Chaplains Fight the Spiritual Battle

from May 22, 2014 Category: Ministry News

Rev. James R. Carter, who served in the military for 23 years on active duty, briefly shares how with your support we are helping our military chaplains fight the spiritual battle.

The Battle Continues

Ever since 9/11 when Muslim extremists staged the largest ever terrorist attack on U.S. soil, this country has been at war. During that time, it is estimated that close to 3 million troops have been deployed. Many have served on multiple deployments. Over that 13 year span, military chaplains have been there to support the troops on the front lines just as they’ve ministered since the Revolutionary War.

It has been said that there are no atheists in foxholes. Wartime provides a ripe and often intense spiritual environment. During crisis, many become more receptive to the Gospel, resulting in fervent study, overflowing worship services, and multiple baptisms. While wartime always includes intense times of adrenaline, there is also a lot of downtime when a tremendous amount of thinking is going on. Chaplains provide the desperately needed spiritual encouragement in these difficult times. The need is great, but the resources are often significantly lacking.

With your help, Ligonier has been honored to support our military and their spiritual needs. Together, we have supplied books, Bibles, teaching series, and much more by Dr. Sproul, our Teaching Fellows, and other like-minded theologians. Because of your gifts, each year more than 4,000 of our Crucial Questions booklets are distributed to troops throughout the world. Ligonier literature is valued by chaplains for its trustworthy teaching, and wide variety of teaching topics. Faith comes through hearing. Good literature gives faith, hope, and boldness to our troops.

This is an exciting partnership, as chaplains use these resources to minister to thousands of troops stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Sinai Peninsula, Korea, Germany, the United States, and many other locations throughout the world. Currently, nearly 200 chaplains are enrolled in the program.

We Can’t Do It without You

We are so grateful that last year your donations surpassed the total needed to fully fund the chaplain support program. Because of your generosity, we were able to provide even more resources to chaplains. We would like to fund this outreach again entirely through this appeal. It will cost $15,000 to fully fund our chaplain program this year, and we rely on friends like you to provide the funds needed to send teaching resources to chaplains around the world. Will you help?

Ligonier is a tremendous resource not only to share with Soldiers but to feed us as shepherds. The audio and video resources along with publications like Tabletalk are tremendous.”

I regularly stock our literature racks with the Crucial Questions booklets and they are hard to keep on the shelves. Military and civilian personnel are eagerly snatching them up to gain a deeper appreciation for the truth of God’s Word. Our military personnel value professionalism and hard work and the quality of these booklets appeal to them. Thank you, Ligonier, for your generosity and faithfulness to the Scriptures!”
