Unlocking the Mystery of Life

The recent release of the movie Expelled has made the question of intelligent design a topic of water cooler conversation once again. But what exactly is "intelligent design," and why is it so upsetting to advocates of Neo-Darwinism? Since the publication in 1991 of Phillip Johnson's Darwin on Trial, a large number of books have been written on the subject, from supporters as well as opponents of intelligent design, but is there anything available on an introductory level?  The answer is yes.

UMOL.jpegIn 2004, Illustra Media produced a 58-minute DVD that summarizes the scientific case for intelligent design. Titled Unlocking the Mystery of Life, the DVD explores, through interviews, the thought of a growing number of scientists who are persuaded that Neo-Darwinism cannot account for the origin and complexity of life. The DVD also contains state of the art computer animation to illustrate the complexity of biological phenomena such as molecular "machines" and the mind-boggling way proteins are built in the cell.

Unlocking the Mystery of Life is accessible to older children in Middle School and High School and informative for adults. It has been aired on PBS stations around the country. Whatever one's views on these issues, Unlocking the Mystery of Life is well worth viewing.
