Is God a "delusion"? Is Christianity dangerous? Are science and faith incompatible? Although these questions are not new, they are being asked more often since the publication of Richard Dawkins' bestselling book The God Delusion.
In October 2007, Richard Dawkins and fellow Oxford professor Dr. John Lennox were invited to Birmingham, Alabama to debate the content of Dawkins' book. The sold out debate was filmed and is now available here on DVD.
I am not sure why it was decided to cover six topics rather than focusing on one, since the latter choice would have allowed adequate time for responses and cross examination by both men. Instead, Dawkins is given several minutes to elaborate his views on each topic, and then Lennox is given several minutes to respond. However, after Lennox's response, they move on to the next topic.
In spite of difficulties caused by the format of the debate, this recorded exchange between Dawkins and Lennox remains instructive for any who are interested in the emergence of the "new atheism."
We are focusing on the "new atheism" in the August edition of Tabletalk magazine.
