Matthew Henry comments on 2 Chronicles 7:14 that “pardoning mercy makes way for healing mercy.” We cannot expect the Lord to fix the problems in the church if we are unwilling to turn from our sin and rest in His grace. But if we turn from our wickedness and commit ourselves to following God’s ways, He will heal divisions in the church, expose false teaching, and do all else necessary to restore His people.
God has met us face-to-face in Jesus, and we can be assured that He will never leave the temple that He is building in His Son with us as living stones (1 Peter 2:1–11). Let us not take this truth for granted but draw near to Him in repentance and faith, asking Him to empower us for service. As we meet with others for worship, let us urge them to do the same that we might be a part of the holy temple that God is making His church to be.
