The Protestant Reformation was a response to corruption and false doctrine, but it was not the first attempt to reform the church. This session will examine the sad moral and doctrinal condition of the church at the time of the Reformation, explaining why reform was needed, and it will also consider the work of various forerunners of the Reformation such as John Wycliffe and Jan Hus and how they helped lay the foundation for Protestantism.

When people are convinced of the depth of their depravity and the sufficiency of Jesus Christ, there cannot help but be a new passion for world missions. The Reformation sparked a new emphasis on fulfilling the Great Commission, and it is a legacy that continues to this day. This session will briefly consider the effect of the Reformation on world missions before explaining why doctrines such as faith alone and Scripture alone mandate our involvement in making disciples of all nations.

Martin Luther’s stand for the gospel was the means through which God brought reformation to His church. Knowing Luther’s life and legacy is essential for understanding the Reformation and for rightly applying its insights today. This session will consider the life and influence of Martin Luther, emphasizing His teachings on the authority of Scripture, justification, and Christian freedom, and how we should continue to hold to them today.

The Reformation brought a renewed sense of the depths of human depravity as well as gospel assurance and a new appreciation for believers as beloved children of God. This session will explore how the Reformers restored to Christians a true view of their sin, the love of God, what pleases God, our ability to respond to Christ, and other matters of the heart.

The Reformation brought about not only doctrinal changes but also changes in the family and home life. This session will look at the changes that the Reformation wrought in terms of marriage and family life, and it will examine how the Reformers laid the foundation for much of our understanding of the role of the family in God’s plan for His creation.

As a result of the Reformation, the preaching of God’s Word was returned to its rightful place of centrality in the worship and edification of God’s people. This session will consider how Reformers such as Martin Luther and John Calvin restored the Word of God to its central place in the church, and it will look at how the faithful preaching of Scripture is one of the most important legacies of the Reformation.
