Enjoying God Is a Command
from Sinclair Ferguson Apr 12, 2021 Category: Articles
While shaking hands at the church door, ministers are sometimes greeted with a spontaneous, "I really enjoyed that!"—which is immediately followed by, "Oh! I shouldn't really say that, should I?" I usually grip tighter, hold the handshake a little longer, and say with a smile, "Doesn't the catechism's first question encourage us to do that? If we are to enjoy Him forever, why not begin now?" Keep Reading

Christian, Do You Love God’s Law?
from Sinclair Ferguson Jan 13, 2021 Category: Articles
Neither Jesus nor Paul had a problem with the law. Paul wrote that his gospel of grace upholds and establishes the law (Rom. 3:31)—even God's laws in their negative form, since the "grace of God . . . teaches us to say 'No'" (Titus 2:11–12 NIV). And remember Jesus' words in Matthew 5:17–19? Our attitude to the law is a litmus test of our relationship to the kingdom of God. Keep Reading

Does Christology Matter?
from Sinclair Ferguson Jan 04, 2021 Category: Articles
“We all unanimously teach that our Lord Jesus Christ is to us one and the same Son, the self-same perfect in Godhead, the self-same perfect in manhood; truly God and truly man … acknowledged in two natures, unconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably … the properties of each nature being preserved.” Keep Reading

4 Principles for the Exercise of Christian Liberty
from Sinclair Ferguson Nov 11, 2020 Category: Articles
It was years ago now, but I still remember the discussion. I was making my way out of our church building some time after the morning service had ended, and was surprised to find a small group of people still engaged in vigorous conversation. One of them turned and said to me, "Can Christians eat black pudding?" Keep Reading

What Is Discernment?
from Sinclair Ferguson May 08, 2020 Category: Articles
Discernment is like the physical senses; to some it is given in unusual measure as a special grace gift (1 Cor. 12:10), but some measure of it is essential for us all and must be constantly nourished. The Christian must take care to develop his "sixth sense" of spiritual discernment. This is why the psalmist prays, "Teach me good judgment and knowledge" (Ps. 119:66). Keep Reading

What Is the Prayer of Faith?
from Sinclair Ferguson Apr 15, 2020 Category: Articles
In the past century and a half, much has been written and said particularly about "the prayer of faith." The focus has been on mountain-moving prayer by which we simply "claim" things from God with confidence that we will receive them because we believe that He will give them. Keep Reading

What Does it Mean to Abide in Christ?
from Sinclair Ferguson Mar 06, 2020 Category: Articles
The exhortation to "abide" has been frequently misunderstood, as though it were a special, mystical, and indefinable experience. But Jesus makes clear that it actually involves a number of concrete realities. Keep Reading

Which Comes First: Repentance or Faith?
from Sinclair Ferguson Mar 02, 2020 Category: Articles
When the gospel is proclaimed, it seems at first sight that two different, even alternative, responses are called for. Sometimes the summons is, "Repent!" Thus, "John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 'Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand'" (Matt. 3:1–2). Again, Peter urged the hearers whose consciences had been ripped open on the day of Pentecost, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ" (Acts 2:38). Later, Paul urged the Athenians to "repent" in response to the message of the risen Christ (Acts 17:30). Keep Reading
