The Barebones family had a history of interesting names. One of his brothers was named (literally) “If Christ had not died, thou wouldst be damned” Barebones (shortened to Damned Barebones); the other was named “Christ came into the world to save” Barebones.
In 1630 a Baptist congregation in London split in two. PraiseGod Barebones was named pastor to one half of the congregation, Henry Jessey the other. It was an interesting “Baptist” congregation that chose Barebones, however, for he was a paedo-baptist, and published a book in 1642 in defense of infant baptism.
He was chosen by Oliver Cromwell to head up what came to be known as “the Barebones Parliament,” which only lasted for 5 months. |
