Eleazer Wheelock was born in Windham CT in 1711. He graduated from Yale
in 1733 and was pastor of the Second Church of Lebanon CT from
1735-1770. A popular preacher during the Great Awakening, he founded a school
at Lebonon primarily to convert and educate Indians to be missionaries
and teachers to their tribles. Dissatisfied with the progress of the
work, he founded Dartmouth College in Hanover NH, and was its first
president.
