Benjamin Wadsworth, the 9th president of Harvard, was born in Milton MA
and died in Cambridge MA. He received the B. A. from Harvard in 1690
and the M. A. in 1693.
In 1693 he became an assistant at First Church Boston, where he
preached once a month until 1696 when he became the regular preacher.
When John Leverett died in 1724, Harvard was without a president for a
year. Wadsworth was chosen president of Harvard in 1725 and remained
there until 1736. He was quite sad to leave his congregation, but they
both considreed it his duty. Soon after he accepted the presidency, his
health became seriously impaired and for the rest of his life he was
little more than an invalid. still he discharged his duties completely. |
