Henry Scudder

History does not provide us with much detail regarding the life of Henry Scudder. He received his M. A. from Christ's College, Cambridge in 1606. He ministered in Drayton, Oxfordshire, until 1633. In 1643 he was chosen as one of the presbyterian members of the Westminster Assembly. His most famous work is The Christian's Daily Walk in Holy Security and Peace. This work has been reprinted by Sprinkle Publications of Harrisonburg, VA from the 1826 edition.

Known more widely by its short title, The Christian's Daily Walk, Scudder's work was recommended by both John Owen and Richard Baxter. Of this work, John Owen wrote, "I must say that I do find in this . . . that authority and powerful evidence of truth, arising from a plain transferring of the sacred sense of the Scripture in words and expressions suited to the experience of gracious, honest, and huble souls, that the most accurate and adorned discourses of this age do not attain or ruse up unto."

Richard Baxter wrote, "I remember not any book which is written to be the daily companion of Christians, to guide them in the practice of a holy life, which I prefer before this. I am sure, none of my own. For so sound is the doctrine of this book and so prudent and spiritual, apt and savor the directions, and all so fully suited to our ordinary cases and conditions, that I heartily wish no family might be without it."
