Edward Reynolds was born in Southampton in 1599. He graduated from
Merton College, Oxford, and then pursued his M. A. and D. D. degrees from
Cambridge. He was one of the preachers at Lincoln's Inn in London in
1622. Reynolds was one of the Westminster Assembly of Divines, appointed
in 1643, but did not take the oath of the covenant until 1644. From
1645-1662 he was vicar of St. Lawrence Jewry in London. Reynolds conformed
at the Restoration, thinking that many more would do so than actually
did. But he was very tolerant of dissenters.
At the advice of Richard Baxter and Edmund Calamy, Edward Reynolds
accepted the appointment to be Bishop of Norwich. He was a very popular
preacher. The Works of Edward Reynolds, a 6 volume set, were last
published in 1826 in 6 volumes. Soli Deo Gloria has reprinted 5 volumes of that
set to date, all of which are still in print |
