Ebenezer Pemberton was the son of a minister, , Joseph Pemberton, one
of the founders of the Old South Church, in Boston. He graduated from
Harvard College in 1691, and was “fellow of the house” there for some
time. He was called to pastor with Samuel Willard, and was ordained in
1700. He married in 1701 and fathered four children.
Willard died in 1707, and Pemberton remained at Old South Church until
his death in 1717. In a eulogy, Joseph Sewall said, "He is justly
celebrated as a great scholar, an excellent divine, and a good Christian."
Some of Pemberton’s last words were these: "I thank God, who hath
given me a good hope through Christ. I can now look for a house not made
with hands, eternal in the heavens when this house of my earthly
tabernacle is dissolved. And this hope is built only upon the merits of Christ,
who hath suffered so much for me, who died and is risen again, and
lives forever to make intercession for me. And upon this foundation is
built my hope for myself, my family, my church, and the whole Israel of
God."
