Cotton Mather was born and died in Boston. He was the son of Increase
Mather, and had John Cotton and Richard Mather for his grandfathers. He
graduated in 1678 from Harvard with B. A. and M. A. degrees, and was
ordained in 1685. He served his entire pastoral ministry at Boston’s
Second Church.
Mather was passed over several times for the presidency of Harvard.
Sensing it to become liberal, he worked to help establish Yale College,
and was instrumental in getting Elihu Yale to put up the money for the
new college.
A tireless worker and prodigious writer, Mather penned over 700 works.
Soli Deo Gloria has republished his "Token for the Children of New
England" (now out of print) and his "A Family Well Ordered." In we plan to
reprint his "Help for Distressed Parents." |
