St. Lawrence Jewry, the church where Christopher Love
pastoredChristopher Love was a Presbyterian minister in London, and a member of the
Westminster Assembly of Divines (though his attendance and impact seem to
be relatively small). He was imprisoned by Oliver Cromwell on the charge
of treason, along with other Presbyterians such as Thomas Watson and
William Jenkyn. He was convicted and beheaded, leaving a wife and three
children, at the age of 33. Thomas Manton and Simeon Ashe preached
funeral sermons for him. His story is told in the book A Spectacle Unto God,
by Don Kistler.
Love is most known for his book The Combat Between the Flesh and the
Spirit, which is contained in The Works of Christopher Love, Volume 1.
Other titles by Love which have been published by Soli Deo Gloria include
Grace, A Treatise of Effectual Calling, and The Mortified Christian.
Also included in volume 1 of his "Works" are Heaven's Glory and Hell's
Terror.
