Richard Busby was educated at Westminster School in London, adjacent to
Westminster Abbey. From there he went to Christ's Church, Oxford, where
he received both is B. A. and M. A. degrees. He was a strict and stern
master, but was loved and admired by his students, some of whom were
Philip Henry, John Locke, Robert South, Frances Atterbury, and John
Dryden. Most of what we know of his manner and character comes from the
biography of Philip Henry, who spoke very highly of him.
Dryden's writings are academic rather than theological. His legacy,
however, will not be in his writings, but in the lives of so many great
preachers whom he shaped as a schoolmaster. |
