Gilbert Burnet was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1643. His mother was
the sister of Archibald Johnson, one of the Scottish Commissioners to
the Westminster Assembly. He was educated until the age of 10 by his
father, who helped him become so proficient in Latin that he was able to
enter Marischal College in Aberdeen. He studied law at first, but his
father had the ministry in mind for him all along.
He was offered a church position, but declined it stating that he was
not yet qualified. He traveled extensively before entering the ministry.
Robert Leighton, the Scottish Puritan and author of a well-known
commentary on 2 Peter, was a long-time friend. The bulk of his ministry was
spent as Bishop of Salisbury.
Soli Deo Gloria is currently working on a new reprint of his Treatise
on Pastoral Care. |
