Thomas Boston is one of the most influential and beloved of all the Scottish divines, perhaps trailing only John Knox and Samuel Rutherford in importance. He received his M. A. degree from the University of Edinburgh. Boston was involved in the Marrow Controversy, dealing with alleged antinomianism, because of his acceptance of Edward Fisher's book, The Marrow Modern Divinity. Included in this controversy were such men as Thomas and Ebenezer Erskine. Boston was not an antinomian.
Boston's wife bore him 10 children, 6 of whom died young. His writings are very popular, including his Human Nature in its Fourfold State and The Crook in the Lot. The former title is published by the Banner of Truth Trust. The latter is almost always in print by various publishers. Soli Deo Gloria is working on a retypeset edition with a study guide for publication in the future. Boston's complete works was reprinted by Richard Owen Roberts Publishers of Carol Stream, Il. in a 12 volume edition. |
