Robert Bolton

Robert Bolton was educated at Lincoln College and BrazenNose College, Oxford, graduating with a B. A. in 1596. He served time as a teaching fellow at the latter school, having exceptional proficiencies in logic and philosophy, as well as in the Greek language. It was said that he was better at Greek than at Latin or English. The Oxford historian Wood says that Robert Bolton was "a most religious and learned Puritan, a painful and constant preacher, a person of great zeal for God . . . ." It was also said of him that he was so famous for relieving afflicted consciences that people from other countries flocked to see him for counsel and guidance. He was said to be a man of nobility and majesty, "a shining light of the Puritan party." Many of Bolton's books were published during and after his lifetime. Four of his works have survived into modern print: General Directions for a Comfortable Walking with God: a Puritan "diary" on guiding our daily lives according to Scripture (SDG) The Four Last Things: Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell (SDG) The Carnal Professor (SDG) Instructions on Comforting Afflicted Consciences (SDG, but out of print)
