Richard Blackerby

Richard Blackerby entered Trinity College, Cambridge at the age of 15 and studied there for 9 years. While there, he came under the preaching of William Perkins. Blackerby was extremely proficient in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. He was never ordained by the established church, but preached whenever and wherever the opportunity was afforded him. He was called to the church at Feltwell in Norfolk, where he continued for some time until expelled for non-conformity. Afterwards he began a theological institution in his home to educate young divinity students. Some of the most eminent preachers in England were his students, the Puritan Samuel Fairclough among them. The Puritan Daniel Rogers of Wethersfield wrote of Blackerby: “I could never come into the presence of Mr. Blackerby without some kind of trembling upon me because of the divine majesty and holiness which seemed to shine in him.” His last pastorate was in Great Thurlow. He died in 1648. Nothing of his was printed.
