William Benn was born at Egremont in Cumberland. He attended Queen’s College in Oxford, but was called to a church before completing his studies. In 1629 he was called to All Saints Church in Dorchestershire, where he stayed until the Great Ejection of 1662. In addition to preaching at his own church, he also preached one day a week at the local jail, where a chapel had to be built just for him because of the large turnout.
He stayed in Dorchestershire after being ejected, and continued to preach, for which he was imprisoned regularly. After he died, a collection of his sermons on 3 John 2 was published under the title Soul Prosperity. It has never been reprinted. |
