Richard Baxter pastored the church at Kidderminster, near Wales. He was much admired in his own day in the area of casuistry, or practical theology. He was not so highly regarded, however, in the area of justification and sanctification. Even his fellow Puritans, who respected his ability to apply Scripture to so many areas of life, wrote strongly against what they called "the Baxterian perversion of the doctrine of justification," which inclined itself towards a "sanctified and then justified" position. Baxter never fell into the fatal error, though, of attributing any merit to anything we do. Soli Deo Gloria has published the 4 volume edition of The Practical Works of Richard Baxter, which contain his most sought after writings. These 4500+ pages contain 100% of everything ever reprinted in modern times by this noted preacher and author, but only 40% of what he actually wrote. His "controversial" and "doctrinal" works have not been reprinted because of the significance of the errors they contained. But Reformed and non-reformed Christians alike praise this man's insight into Scripture application.
Dr. J. I. Packer, who did his doctoral work on Richard Baxter, calls his Christian Directory (contained in vol. 1 of the Works) the most important Christian book ever written besides the Bible itself. Dr. Timothy Keller called that book "the greatest manual on Biblical counseling ever produced."
