I Need a Priest!

We are attacked from every side. We have been besieged by sin and driven to desperation. We recognize our need and cry out for a priest — we don’t want someone who will tell us what to do, we don’t want a mere prophet. We want a priest. We want someone who will pour soothing oil on our wounds, someone who will give absolution, someone who will earnestly pray for us before the throne of God. We want someone we can tell our deepest secrets to — someone we can count on to the very end. You ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He — Lord Sabaoth is His name. From age to age He is the same, and He will win the battle. Jesus Christ is our Mighty Fortress who never fails — our great High Priest.

The book of Hebrews reveals the High Priest of our confession. Hebrews establishes Christ’s unqualified supremacy over all things. For He is the Son of God who is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. Yet, for our sake, our great High Priest was made lower than the angels. He is the appointed Heir of all things, the radiance of God’s glory, and the exact imprint of His nature. On our behalf He entered the Holy of Holies and offered Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for our sin, securing our eternal redemption. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are — yet without sin.

The book of Hebrews is a treasury for our souls. With all of its complexity and grandeur, Hebrews ignites our hearts with praise to Jesus Christ. For He is our Prophet, Priest, and King who offered Himself as our sacrifice. He has healed our wounds and has forgiven our sins. He intercedes for us before the throne of God, and it is because of Him we live coram Deo, before the face of God. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive His mercy and grace.
