“In our day, when spiritual darkness is again widespread, we can learn much from Luther and his uncompromising advocacy of the gospel.”
Five hundred years ago, Europe was shrouded in spiritual darkness. The church had become corrupt both morally and theologically. Yet the light of truth had not been snuffed out. It existed as a flicker, sustained in God's providence by faithful men and women who trusted in Christ. That flicker roared into a flame in 1517 with Martin Luther's posting of his Ninety-Five Theses. God raised up a bold leader who would be a key figure in the Protestant Reformation.
In our day, when spiritual darkness is again widespread, we can learn much from Luther and his uncompromising advocacy of the gospel. Looking to what God has done in the past, we can see what must be done to bring about a new reformation. On August 11, 2017, Ligonier Ministries is hosting a special conference in Wittenberg, Germany, to commemorate the Protestant Reformation and to learn from Luther in our twenty-first century. Dr. W. Robert Godfrey, Dr. Steven Lawson, Rev. Matthias Lohmann, Dr. Al Mohler, and Rev. Steffen Mueller, will consider the life of Luther, the doctrines he and the other Reformers proclaimed, and the means by which the Reformation was sustained, drawing lessons for the church in the present. Afterward, there will be a hymn concert featuring works from, Glory to the Holy One and other hymn projects.
I invite you to join Ligonier for this special event, which falls conveniently between our Reformation Study Tour & Cruise (July 28 – August 10) and our Land of Luther Study Tour (August 14–21). It promises to be an encouraging and edifying time of remembering the past and looking to how it informs our future. Will you consider attending in Wittenberg in 2017?
