Five hundred years ago, the sound of a monk’s hammer on a door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany, caught the attention not only of the town’s citizens but reverberated across the world. When Martin Luther posted the Ninety-Five Theses on October 31, 1517, to call for debate on the topic of indulgences, the Protestant Reformation began. No longer would the gospel be obscured in the Western church, but the biblical truth that we are justified by faith alone in Christ alone would be heard once again. The world would never be the same.
The five-hundredth anniversary of the Reformation calls for celebration and remembrance lest we forget this event and the doctrinal truths that sparked it. Thus, Ligonier Ministries is honored to host a special evening celebrating the Reformation this fall. On October 30, 2017, Sinclair Ferguson, Steve Nichols, Burk Parsons, and Derek Thomas will join me in covering the Reformation in brief messages that highlight the gospel, what it means to have peace with God, the historical setting of the Reformation, and other topics. Clips covering Luther’s life and influence will be interspersed between the messages, and we will also sing hymns from Glory to the Holy One and the soon-to-be-released Saints of Zion album.
I am excited about this event, which you can attend in person or watch live online. Please consider joining us this fall to celebrate the Reformation.
