Thus Says the Lord: The Authority of Scripture

What has final authority for the church's doctrine and practice? Is it Scripture, tradition, or the decisions of church leaders? Because Scripture is breathed out by God Himself (2 Tim. 3:16–17), Scripture alone can serve as our final authority for faith and life. This message will consider the authority of Scripture, demonstrating that when Scripture speaks, God speaks.

God’s Unchanging Word: The Doctrine of Scripture

Ephesians 2:20 tells us that the church of Christ is "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone." The teaching of the prophets and Apostles, found in Holy Scripture, is the foundation upon which our Lord builds His church, making the doctrine of Scripture of paramount importance for God's people. This message will examine the foundational nature of the doctrine of Scripture and why the church must be concerned to protect and preserve it.

Men Moved by God: The Doctrine of Inspiration

"No prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit" (2 Peter 1:21). The Bible was written by human authors, but these authors were moved by the Holy Spirit so as to give us the very words of God Himself. This message will look at the inspiration of Scripture, affirming that the Lord made use of the biblical writers' talents, histories, and styles to give us the very Word of God down to every letter of Scripture.

Trusting God: Living by God’s Word

"Man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD" (Deut. 8:3). God's Word must do more than just fill our minds—it must penetrate our hearts and inform our actions. This message will look at what it means to live by God's Word and to have our thoughts, words, deeds, and affections shaped by Scripture.

At Work in Us: God’s Word and the Local Church

The Apostle Paul instructed Timothy, encouraging him to "preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching" (2 Tim. 4:2). The local church will only be as healthy as its teachers, pastors, and leaders are faithful in preaching and teaching the Word of God. This message will consider the role of God's Word in the local church and its necessity for effective, God-honoring ministry.

Jesus’ View of Scripture: What the Bible Says about Inerrancy

Jesus is Lord, so our view of Scripture's truth should be no less than His. Jesus, along with the prophets and Apostles, affirmed that God's Word is truth (John 17:17), so we know that Scripture teaches no untrue doctrine and makes no false statements about any matter. This message will explore what Scripture says about its truthfulness, and it will look at what it means when we confess the Bible is free from error.

All Things for Life and Godliness: The Sufficiency of Scripture

Paul explains to Timothy that Scripture will make us complete and "equipped for every good work" (2 Tim. 3:16–17). From determining doctrine to explaining how we may please God in all of life, Scripture is sufficient to train us for life and godliness. This message will explain what we mean when we proclaim that Scripture is sufficient for guiding both the church and the individual Christian.
