"The highest purpose of the preacher is to faithfully exposit the Scriptures to his hearers."

Dear friend,

In every generation, there is a great need for pastors, teachers, and spiritual leaders to be fully equipped and energized to preach God's Word. As the pulpit goes, so goes the church. Especially in these days, when so many dismiss and attack the gospel, we must be bold in our proclamation of the truth.

During the past thirty years of my preaching ministry, I have seen with my own eyes what the Lord affirms in His Word: that the gospel is "the power of God unto salvation" (Rom. 1:16) and that He saves people from sin through the "folly of what we preach" (1 Cor. 1:21). Ministering alongside one of my mentors, Dr. R.C. Sproul, and proclaiming the character of our holy God has convinced me that the highest purpose of the preacher is to faithfully exposit the Scriptures to his hearers. I have seen that the only sure way to lasting discipleship is the bold preaching of the Bible. This is what helps people to live with one supreme passion for God and His glory.

We must not look to gospel gimmicks, manipulative methods, or shallow entertainment, but to the proclamation of biblical truth—the very power of God in His church. The challenges of our age are great, and the temptation to look for God's power outside of the proclamation of His Word is ever present. Thus, pastors need encouragement to continue preaching the Word faithfully, and parishioners need encouragement to find preachers who are committed to this high calling.

Ligonier Ministries, the teaching fellowship of Dr. R.C. Sproul, shares my conviction. For decades, Ligonier has proclaimed the whole counsel of God around the world, trusting in the power of the Lord to awaken in His people a love for His character, especially His majestic holiness. On behalf of Ligonier and Dr. Sproul, I want to personally invite you to a special Ligonier Ministries event this fall at the Round Church in Cambridge on 6th September, 2013 (I will also be at GraceLife Church in London on 5th September, 2013). I will be teaching on the importance and power of expository preaching, and we will consider how we can better equip leaders and laity alike to place first importance on biblical preaching.

The goal of this free Ligonier event is to encourage pastors, church leaders, Bible teachers, and others to be committed to the preaching of God's Word to His people and to His world. Our afternoon sessions are designed to encourage and equip pastors in their preaching ministries. We will gather in the evening for a worship service that is open to the entire community. There I will preach on the one passion we are to have for knowing and loving God's character. Visit thegoodbook.co.uk/ligonier-cambridge-2013 to register for this event.

Please join Ligonier Ministries and me in Cambridge on September 6th as we seek to glorify God in the preaching of His Word.

In Christ,

Steven Lawson
