In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul describes the characteristics of biblical love. It is the foundation on which all of the fruit of the Spirit rests. Love acknowledges God’s glory and honor and submits to His rule. Love also inclines us to desire what is good for our neighbor, disposes us toward contentment, and restrains all bitterness.

Joy is grounded in the Christian’s celebration of Christ’s victory. Christians rejoice because their names are written in heaven. Because we have been saved, Christians can have peace with others and with ourselves. The peace the Christian has is a peace that passes all understanding.

Love, joy, and peace are not the only fruits that are demonstrated in the lives of Christians. The fruits of the Spirit include patience and kindness, goodness and faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things, Paul tells us, there is no law.
