The One Church
In the Nicene Creed, Christians confess their belief in “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church.” Jesus Himself prayed that the church would be one even as He and the Father are one. But what does this “oneness” mean? When we see hundreds of Christian denominations, must we believe that Christ’s prayer has not been answered? Must we change our creed? In this lecture, we will examine what it means to confess that the church is one.
The Holy Church
Christians confess not only that the church of Jesus Christ is one but also that the church is holy. God has called His people to be holy. Yet how can confess that the church is holy when the church is a fellowship of sinners? What does it mean to confess that the church is holy? In this lecture, we will introduce this question and outline the biblical answer.
The Catholic Church
The church is not only one and holy, it is also “catholic.” In other words, it is universal. The church is not limited to the people of one era or one geographical location. The church transcends all of these barriers. When we gather for worship, we gather in the presence of Christ with all the saints of all nations and languages and with all the saints who have gone before us. In this lecture, we will explain what the Bible teaches about the universality of the church.
The Apostolic Church
A structure cannot stand without a solid foundation, and the church rests on an apostolic foundation with Christ as the chief cornerstone. This foundation is under increasing attack in our day by those who would rebuild the church on a foundation of their own creation. In this lecture, we will explain the significance of the church’s apostolic foundation and why it must be defended. |
