Pillars of the Christian Faith

Schedule
Tuesday, October 20, 2009

SESSION 1: Thy Word is Truth, Sinclair Ferguson
(Tuesday, October 20, 10:00–11:15 a.m.)
The Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are inspired by God; that is, they are “God-breathed.”  Because it is the Word of God, the Scripture is the final, inerrant, authoritative norm for faith and practice.  Since the Enlightenment, however, the authority of God’s Word has come under constant attack.  Christian leaders who are followers of Jesus Christ must hold fast to the inspiration, inerrancy, and authority of God’s Word.

SESSION 2: Our Sovereign God, Steven Lawson
(Tuesday, October 20, 11:20 – 12:20 PM)
In a pluralistic and relativistic age, Christian leaders in the Church must stand firm in proclaiming the one living and true God who is revealed in Scripture.  The one true God is one in being or essence and three in person: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  The Triune God is holy and sovereign.  These biblical truths are often attacked, and those who watch over the church must, therefore, be diligent to teach and defend them.

SESSION 3: Creation and Providence, R.C. Sproul
(Tuesday, October 20, 2:15 – 3:15 PM)
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, and what God creates He sustains. In other words, all things were created by God, and all things are upheld, directed, and governed by Him.  Many Christians today have doubts about these biblical truths.  We have been told from our youth onward, that our existence is the result of chance and time.  Faithful Christian leaders must understand the significance of the biblical doctrines of creation and providence and teach them.

SESSION 4: Questions & Answers, Duncan, Ferguson, Lawson, Sproul
(Tuesday, October 20, 4:00 – 5:00 PM)

SESSION 5: The Word Became Flesh, Ligon Duncan
(Tuesday, October 20, 7:30 – 8:30 PM)
If we are to be saved, we must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.  But which Jesus?  There are many false Christs, including the Christ of the Mormons, the Christ of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and others.  Christian leaders in the Church must proclaim the biblical Christ, the only begotten Son of God, who is very God and very man, yet one Christ, the only Mediator between God and man.

SESSION 1: The Holy Spirit, Sinclair Feguson
(Wednesday, October 21, 9:00 – 10:05 AM)
With the rise of Pentecostalism and the charismatic movement in the twentieth century, the Holy Spirit is no longer the forgotten person of the Trinity.  There is, however, great confusion among many church members about His person and work and gifts.  It is the responsibility of those called to lead the church to teach those who are entrusted to them about the Holy Spirit – the third Person of the Trinity.

SESSION 2: Created in God’s Image, Ligon Duncan
(Wednesday, October 21, 10:40 – 11:40 AM)
According to John Calvin, knowledge of God and knowledge of ourselves are intimately connected.  It is important, therefore, that Christian leaders in the church teach and defend what God has revealed about the origin and nature of man.  We did not evolve from lower life forms, and our lives are not a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.  We are created in the image of God for His sovereign purposes.

SESSION 3: Cosmic Treason, R.C. Sproul
(Wednesday, October 21, 1:45 – 2:55 PM)
Man did not remain in the state of righteousness in which he was created.  He sinned against God and fell, becoming dead in sin and defiled in every faculty of soul and body.  Most people today deny this fact, believing that man is by nature good.  It is incumbent upon faithful Christian leaders therefore to teach the truth about the Fall and about the true nature and evil of sin.

SESSION 4: Saved by Grace, Steven Lawson
(Wednesday, October 21, 3:55 – 5:00 PM)
The Apostle Paul pronounced an anathema on any who would distort the gospel of Jesus Christ.  This has not stopped the spread of false gospels, however.  There is no more solemn responsibility given to Christian leaders in the church than to proclaim and defend the true gospel.  Christian leaders must understand Christ’s work of atonement.  They must understand the biblical teaching about justification, saving faith, and sanctification.  With Paul, they must refuse to compromise.

VESPERS SERVICE, R.C. Sproul
(Wednesday, October 21, 7:30 – 8:45 PM)

Thursday, October 22, 2009

SESSION 1: The Church and Sacraments, Ligon Duncan
(Thursday, October 22, 9:00 – 10:10 AM)
Some of the deepest and longest lasting divisions in the church are the result of disagreements about what the Bible teaches concerning the church, worship, and the sacraments. This raises one of the more serious difficulties that Christian leaders face because while acknowledging these differences, Christian leaders in the church remain responsible for teaching the truth.

SESSION 2: The Last Things, Sinclair Ferguson
(Thursday, October 22, 11:15 – 12:15 PM)
Many Christian leaders try to avoid teaching anything about the last things, or “eschatology,” but this element of theology is as important as any other.  Christians must be taught by those called to lead that Jesus Christ has promised to come again, that he has promised to raise the bodies of the dead and to judge all mankind.  The lake of fire awaits those who have rejected Christ, while a new heavens and earth awaits Christ’s people.  Christian leaders must defend these truths from all attacks.
