  • Escaping Anonymity

from Tim Challies Apr 22, 2009 Category: Articles

Admiral Lord Nelson once remarked that "every sailor is a bachelor when beyond Gibraltar." This was a statement about anonymity, a rare concept even just a few short generations ago. Nelson knew that once his sailors moved beyond the bounds of the British Empire, beyond society's systems of morality and accountability, they underwent a transformation. Every man became a bachelor and sought only and always his own pleasure. Those who have read biographies of John Newton will see there a vivid portrayal of a man who was a gentleman at home but who was vulgar and abusive while away. Given only a measure of anonymity he became a whole new man. Keep Reading
  • Standards of Accountability

from Tim Challies Mar 22, 2009 Category: Articles

When the minister of the gospel faces the Lord God as judge, there will be many questions addressed to him. There will be many standards of accountability. There will be many criteria of judgment. But in the end, the most essential criterion of judgment for the minister of God is, "Did you preach the Word? Did you fully carry out the ministry of the Word? In season and out of season, was the priority of your ministry the preaching of the Word?" Keep Reading
  • Ligonier National Conference - Robert Godfrey

from Tim Challies Mar 21, 2009 Category: Articles

The Ligonier Ministries National Conference is drawing to a close. We have come to the final day and began with a message from Dr. Robert Godfrey who preached on "The Holiness of God and the Cross." He began by saying that even as Christians we tend to have a trivial view of sin which turns sinners into naughty kids and God into an indulging grandfather. We like to sin, God likes to forgive, so what's the problem? Keep Reading
  • Ligonier National Conference - Thabiti Anyabwile

from Tim Challies Mar 20, 2009 Category: Articles

Late this afternoon we heard from Thabiti Anyabwile on "Cosmic Treason: Sin & the Holiness of God." He began by joking that his name is Swahili and roughly translated means "suffering for Jesus in the Cayman Islands." And then he got down to business. He read Numbers 25 and divided his exposition of this chapter into four sections. He wanted to use this passage to make some observations about sin as cosmic treason. Keep Reading
  • Ligonier National Conference - Q&A Session II

from Tim Challies Mar 20, 2009 Category: Articles

After lunch today we enjoyed a Q&A session. R.C. Sproul moderated discussion between Sinclair Ferguson, Steven Lawson, R.C. Sproul Jr. and Alistair Begg. At first I wrote down both the questions and answers, at least as best as I was able. But as time went on, it became quite clear that this was really a kind of discussion between friends. And a discussion is hard to adequately summarize in just a few lines and a few scattered sentences. A straight Q&A is typically straightforward, but this kind of conversation or discussion and all the back-and-forth it involves is quite difficult to do justice to. What I thought I would do, then, is share with you the topics they discussed and leave it to you to find the audio files so you can listen along. Keep Reading
  • Ligonier National Conference - Alistair Begg

from Tim Challies Mar 20, 2009 Category: Articles

This morning Alistair Begg preached on "The Breath of the Almighty: The Holy Spirit" and used as his text John 16:5-15. I jotted down some notes... Keep Reading
  • Ligonier National Conference - R.C. Sproul

from Tim Challies Mar 19, 2009 Category: Articles

The subject of God's holiness has been a theme at Ligonier Ministries since its infancy and it is good to revisit that theme this year, one year before Sproul's book The Holiness of God reaches its twenty-fifth anniversary. And who better to introduce the subject and kick of the conference proper than Dr. Sproul? He preached tonight from Isaiah 45:1-8. Keep Reading
  • Ligonier National Conference - Sinclair Ferguson

from Tim Challies Mar 19, 2009 Category: Articles

After a rather tasty lunch we gathered again, this time to hear Sinclair Ferguson speak about "The Doctrines of Grace." He began by reading Ephesians 1 and said that no man has had a greater impact on his thinking than John Calvin. Keep Reading

The 2009 Ligonier Ministries National Conference begins today. This mini-conference features messages from Al Mohler, Steven Lawson, Sinclair Ferguson and Ligon Duncan. They will each speak one time and will also participate in a panel discussion. Keep Reading
