Lord High & Holy, Thou Has Brought Me to the Valley of Vision

from Dec 28, 2009 Category: Ligonier Resources

The strength of Puritan character and life lay in the practice of prayer and meditation. The Valley of Vision is a collection of Puritan prayers that serves to prompt and encourage Christians with biblical models. In beautiful poetic form, these passionate prayers are brought to life as they model the concerns and praises we bring before our Father, including the Trinity, redemption, reconciliation, penitence, approach to God, gifts of grace, and service and ministry.

Lord, high and holy, meek and lowly,
     Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,
     where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;
     hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold thy glory.
Lord, in the daytime stars can be seen from deepest wells,
     and the deeper the wells the brighter thy stars shine;
Let me find thy light in my darkness,
     thy life in my death,
     thy joy in my sorrow,
     thy grace in my sin,
     thy riches in my poverty,
     thy glory in my valley.

Available in both book ($20.80) and CD ($20.90) formats.

My first introduction to the prayers of the puritans in The Valley of Vision was in 2006, when I started to attend a small church in Bellingham, Wa called Oikos Fellowship. The young pastor Pete Williamson would read one prayer each service before he would call the congregation to private prayer. The eloquence, reverence and gratitude that his reading brought to my soul affected me in ways that only the Word of God could compare.

When the soul begins to interact with such reverence, it is required to respond with a deepening love and understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ. It creates in me a better understanding of what He’s done, what He’s doing, and what He will do in our lives and all those that are His.

Over the last couple years I have been on a mission night and day to find ways to get my heart, mind and soul to new levels of understanding. Knowing that all wisdom comes from God on high (Job 12:13), I have embarked on finding ways to redeem the time and specifically take captive the content of every thought that my mind processes each day. So I turned to technology to try and win this battle that we all face on a daily basis. Having the audio version of The Valley of Vision has been a tremendous asset to me accomplishing my goal of getting closer each day to the Lord Jesus Christ. I have this series of puritan prayers on my iPhone, Zune and computer. I setup playlists based on different categories and have included these prayers with some of my Bible playlist such as Psalms, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. I make sure that I listen to at least one prayer in the morning, one prayer in the afternoon and a prayer before I go to bed. I am also able to search for certain prayers based on my personal needs or be able to provide a prayer of encouragement to my family or friends in a time of despair.

Let us join together daily to redeem the time and the content that our minds process on a daily basis. Add The Valley of Vision to your arsenal of weapons to fend off all corrupt thoughts that left unchallenged, will corrupt our minds and deceive us, drawing us away from our Lord Jesus Christ’s rule and dominion.”
