Deus Pro Nobis
from Tim Challies Nov 03, 2010 Category: Tabletalk Magazine
"As we enter the second decade of the twenty-first century, we have reached an all-time low in terms of our expectations for college students. Both parents and students seem to have ingested a lowest-common-denominator sedative that has led many to enter college with an overwhelming feeling of doubt and desperation." Keep Reading -

The Peace that Passes
from Tim Challies Oct 28, 2010 Category: Tabletalk Magazine
"The Bible is a book that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Look at it from one perspective, and it’s rather a small book. It occupies less space on a shelf than a dictionary. Some versions you can even carry in your pocket. Yet when we consider all that is within it, it’s a rather large book. It equips us for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16). Its riches can and will occupy our meditations into eternity." Keep Reading -
We Believe the Bible and You Do Not
from Tim Challies Oct 26, 2010 Category: Tabletalk Magazine
Keith Mathison was recently reading Francis Pieper’s Christian Dogmatics, and ran across this statement: "The difference between the Lutheran Church and the Reformed in the doctrine of Baptism is fully and adequately defined by saying that the former believes God’s Word regarding Baptism, the latter not." Keith says "Let that one sink in for just a moment. Here we have one of the most respected Lutheran systematic theologians of the last century saying that the difference between his church and the Reformed over baptism can be summed up as follows: 'Lutherans believe the Bible, and the Reformed don’t.' It’s just that simple, right?" Keep Reading -
Tabletalk 2011: The First Six Months
from Chris Donato Oct 25, 2010 Category: Tabletalk Magazine
For more than thirty years, Tabletalk has existed as a magazine for the church. So it strives to help explain important, biblical doctrines and events that shape the church while encouraging people to reflect the image of Christ in both word and deed. We are proud to follow that same trajectory in 2011—dealing with issues that challenge, exhort, and encourage God’s people. And all this is offered on top of our daily devotional readings and various columns, which deal with entirely different topics throughout the year. What follows is a brief look at what’s coming in the next six months. Keep Reading -
Biblical Objectivity
from Tim Challies Oct 22, 2010 Category: Tabletalk Magazine
The news industry has fallen upon difficult times. The old model has come close to complete disintegration, revenues have plummeted and few hold out much hope for those old media. Nick Eicher is publisher of World magazine and CEO of God’s World Publications. He has witnessed this decline from an insider's perspective. And yet he is not lamenting the change. Keep Reading -
Receiving the Baton
from Tim Challies Oct 19, 2010 Category: Tabletalk Magazine
Bob Kauflin sees that he is running the final laps of his race here on earth and this has made him start thinking about passing the baton. In the current issue of Tabletalk he writes, "Last year I gave a message on transferring ministry responsibility to the next generation. In my preparation, I came across some principles for passing the baton in a relay race that are surprisingly relevant for young leaders." Keep Reading -
Grace Transforms Everything
from Tim Challies Oct 15, 2010 Category: Tabletalk Magazine
Sean Michael Lucas noted that in his town a church just went through a rebranding effort "as part of their relocation to a new building in a different section of town. Their logo and signage are beautiful and well conceived. One sees their stickers on cars everywhere. And their tagline is memorable: 'Faith changes everything.'" While on one hand he is inclined to agree with this statement, on the other hand he wonders if it wouldn't be better to speak of grace. Keep Reading -
Apostasy
from Larry McCall Oct 11, 2010 Category: Tabletalk Magazine
"Come winter, the ice forms almost imperceptibly on the lake near our home. After the first few cold nights, a bit of skim ice may be noticed by the observant passerby. Gradually, ever so gradually, the ice thickens as the cold takes its grip on our northern Indiana community. By the dead of winter, fisherman labor at drilling through two feet of hard ice to get through to the warmer waters below." Keep Reading -
Justification by Death?
from R.C. Sproul Oct 06, 2010 Category: Tabletalk Magazine
In this article from the current issue of Tabletalk, R.C. Sproul deals with one of the most pervasive false views of justification--that justification comes by death. "It is an implicit universalism that assumes everyone goes to heaven when he or she dies. Perhaps the most rank evildoers, such as Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin, may not make it, but the average person certainly has nothing to worry about." Keep Reading
